AL HAHN (June 1951)
Earning a doctorate from a major accredited university is a considerable accomplishment for anyone. Dr. Allen Hahn (June ’51) earned both a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Missouri in 1958, and a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Drexel University in 1968. These degrees were followed by a noteworthy career in teaching, research, and service to his profession.
Dr. Hahn taught and did research at Auburn University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Drexel University before returning to the University of Missouri, where he spent thirty years before retiring as a Professor Emeritus in 2000.
During his career, he was the author or co-author of over 180 scientific publications. He was the holder of five United States Patents for his research inventions, and he was awarded over $2.3 million in research grants for the university.
Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Hahn was a co-founder and president of the Veterinary Data Base, a storage center for research and treatment information from twenty-six contributing veterinary hospitals.
Dr. Hahn served as president or chairman of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, the Academy of Veterinary Cardiology, the Rocky Mountain Bioengineering Society, the American Veterinary Computer Society, and the American College of Veterinary Informatics, to name just a few.
He was listed in American Men and Women of Science, Who’s Who in International Medical Electronics and Biomedical Engineering, Who’s Who in the Midwest, and Who’s Who in Frontier Science and Technology.
In 1993, Dr. Hahn received the MU Alumni Association Faculty Alumni Award, and the Geyer Award for Public Service to Higher Education in 2001. He was made a lifetime member of the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association in 2002, and in 2004, an Honor Roll Member of the American Veterinary Medical Association.
